Chile relief: Dustin and Sarah Gingrich, EMM missionaries from Landisville Mennonite, continue active involvement in relief efforts in Chile. If you would like to assist Chile relief efforts with a financial gift, funds can be sent to ”Chile relief, EMM, PO Box 458, Salunga, PA 17538″. Please continue to hold the people of Chile in prayer.

Embroidery of newborn blankets: For several years our congregation has gifted families at Parent-Child dedications with a blanket, which contained an embroidery with the baby’s name and birthday.  Mae Stoltzfus most recently embroidered these blankets.  We are currently looking for someone who would be willing to take the blankets to an Embroiderer so that this gift can continue.  If you would be willing to assist in this, please contact a member of the pastoral team.

“Were you there?” A walk through Holy Week
Our traditional service on April 1 (Maundy Thursday) will take a different shape this year. Following our series of worship services in Lent, our Holy Week worship service will invite us back into the experiences of Holy Week.  Using guided reflections, scripture reading, sights and sounds, & acts of worship such as communion & prayer, you will be invited to walk through the days of Holy Week.  More information to about the service will be provided in coming weeks.

The Parenting Sunday school elective will discuss a different topic each Sunday in March (“Handling Money” March 7, “Discipline” March 14, “Boy/Girl Relationships” March 21, and “Passing on the Faith” March 28). If you are interested in serving on a panel of parents on any of these days, please let Jonathan Bowman know.

Taking up a cross:  a journey to Easter It is easy to jump from the events of Palm Sunday to Easter and miss the richness of the stories that take place in between. This year our Lenten worship services will guide us through the week of Holy Week, sharing the story of each day to see the events that unfolded as Jesus took up his cross. Each Sunday of Lent will focus on one specific day of Holy Week, starting of course with Jesus entering Jerusalem amidst waving palms. Join us as we journey with Jesus toward his cross and resurrection.

What are you “taking up”? Jesus invited us to take up our cross, even as he talked about his own.  This Lenten season we will be following Jesus through the stories of Holy Week, moving toward his cross and resurrection.  As we move with Jesus through these stories, you will be invited to consider what you might “take up”.  What might the Spirit of God be nudging you to take up as an act of sacrificial worship? a ministry of service? creating space for reading scripture? providing hospitality? mentoring a young person or couple? the possibilities are endless.  Hold the question out to God in prayer and listen closely for what God might invite you to “take up”.

For all who work with children: the superintendents and child protection committee ask that all childcare workers, children’s Sunday school teachers, mentors, etc., attend a brief informational meeting in the sanctuary following Sunday school today (if you missed the one on January 10), regarding our congregation’s child protection guidelines. If did not attend the previous meeting, and cannot make it to this one, please let Jonathan Bowman know.

During the worship service on February 14, we will be giving new Bibles to those who turn ten this year. You are invited to write a favorite verse and brief words of encouragement in the Bibles. They are on a table in the foyer.

Care packages for college students: There are 15 boxes in the foyer in which to place gifts (food, snacks, notes, food, munchies, food, etc.) for those among us who are full time college students. These will be delivered after Feb. 7. Ask Jonathan Bowman if you have questions.

A choir is forming to learn music for some future church services and possibly a concert. If you enjoy singing, we would love to have you join. If you are interested, please talk to Doug Bomberger or Marcy Goehrig for details.

You are invited to join the Jr. High youth in the Souper Bowl of Caring: Bring a donation of cash or a nonperishable food item to church on Sunday, February 7!  All proceeds will go to the Water Street Mission in Lancaster. More than 20 years ago, the Souper Bowl of Caring began with a simple prayer from a single youth group: “Lord, as we enjoy the Super Bowl football game, help us be mindful of those without even a bowl of soup to eat.” The Souper Bowl of Caring is a grass roots, faith based crusade against hunger and since its beginning in 1990 has raised over $60 million.  In 2009, over 13,00 groups raised over $10 million for soup kitchens, food banks and other helping charities.  Although Souper Bowl of Caring most often benefits local food banks and soup kitchens international hunger organizations have been recipients as well.

Martha Charles went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, January 26th. Martha was a long-time resident of Landis Homes and a valued member of our church for many years. Her funeral was held at Landis Homes East Chapel on Saturday January 30. May God bring comfort and healing to her family and friends.

Thanks to Stu Cary who has agreed to coordinate the peace candle lighting each Sunday for the coming year. If you would like to light the candle for a month please contact him.

Stewardship University, a ministry partnership between MMA and our local faith community, is coming to Lancaster Mennonite School on March 6, 2010.  It is an outstanding educational opportunity to learn about and celebrate stewardship.  You can register for all day sessions or a single session.  You will find a brochure in your mail box today outlining all the details. Creation Care in Holistic Mission will be the topic of the annual Mission Festival at Akron Mennonite Church, to be held on February 6-7.  The guest speaker for Mission Festival this year is Dr. Luke Gascho, Executive Director of the Merry Lea Environmental Learning Center in Goshen (Ind.) College.  In addition to his role with the center, Dr Gascho also serves as the chair of the Goshen College Strategic Planning Committee and provides leadership for the Mennonite Creation Care Network. His Saturday evening session, starting at 6:30 p.m., is entitled Biblical and Global Realities of Creation Care and will examine how faith expressions and caring for the Earth are often seen as being at odds with each other. The Sunday Morning Sermon  (worship service starts at 9 a.m.) will address Creation Care is an Act of Peace.  During Discipleship Hour (10:30 a.m.), Dr. Gascho’s topic will be The Church Engages Creation Care. This session will encourage holistic stewardship in daily life. Practical applications will be shared and discussed.

Dear Church family, Dustin and Sarah’s youngest son, Reuben fell from a tree house this Monday evening.  It fractured his skull and he had a contusion, which they operated on to remove the broken pieces and to put a plate in. Candy making totals: The congregation helped the youth raise more than $3800. We again thank everyone for your generosity in offering time, energy & funds to make the fundraiser so successful and enjoyable!

Care packages for college students: The next two Sundays, January 31 and February 7, there will be 15 boxes in the foyer in which to place gifts (food, snacks, notes, food, munchies, food, etc.) for those among us who are full time college students. Ask Jonathan Bowman if you have questions.

Kathy Yoder will be licensed for ordination on Sunday, January 31 at 10:15 a.m. at West Swamp Mennonite Church, 2501 Allentown Rd., Quakertown, PA.  Dale W. Stoltzfus and Gina Burkhart will assist with the service and anyone is welcome to attend.

You are invited to attend Wednesday Night Out on Feb. 3.

Meal is served 5:45-6:30. Game night, 7:00-8:00 pm. Bring table games to play. The volleyball net will be set up for those who wish to play. Childcare will be provided for ages 0-grade 1.

We express our sympathy and love to family and friends of Elizabeth Herr, who died at the age of 104 on January 13, 2010.

The floral arrangement on the front table is in honor of the 50^th wedding anniversary of Ed and Mary Miller. They were married on January 16, 1960.

Topics needed for parenting class: One of the intergenerational Sunday school electives in the month of March will be a discussion-oriented class on parenting. Topics will include discipline and handling money, and we hope to connect with parents of children of all ages. We need other suggestions for topics that address real needs and concerns of parents in our congregation. If you have a topic or question that you would like to see addressed by parents in the congregation, please contact Brenda Horst or Jonathan Bowman.

Please pray for the Senior High youth as they attend the Lancaster Conference Youth Retreat this weekend: that those participating in the weekend would experience growth, both in our desire to follow Christ and in our closeness as a group.

The big move: Ken & Kathy plan to move their belongings via rental truck to Quakertown, PA on Friday morning, January 8.  They would like the assistance of 4-5 men (with muscles!) to help move furniture and several ladies to assist with cleaning from 8:30-10:00 am if possible.  West Swamp church members will meet them in Quakertown to assist with the unloading. They plan to reside at a rental on Camp Men-O-Lan until they purchase a home. They plan to keep their current e-mail addresses. Kathy will begin her duties officially on January 10.  Please be in prayer for them as they make this transition.

Transition in Worship

In light of Gina’s transition from the role of Pastor of Worship, it seems fitting to update the congregation on the interim plan for worship planning and oversight.  For the next several months Pastor Randall will oversee the three worship planning teams who will continue planning our weekly worship service, and Susan Sharp will coordinate the prelude and offertory schedules.  The Ministry Leadership Team has been discussing the Pastor of Worship role and plans to take a recommendation to the Congregational Leadership Board in January. The steps toward filling this role and communicating with the congre-gation will be discussed at the January Team and Board meetings. We do covet the prayers and input of the congregation as we discern God’s leading in this transition.

Peace candle: At the end of this year Hersh Leaman is stepping down from coordinating the lighting of the peace candle. This is a plea for someone else to coordinate that.
