In Isaiah 35 the prophet writes to a people in captivity reminding them of the restoration and new life God will bring.  Isaiah writes in verses 1-2, “The desert and the parched land will be glad; the wilderness will rejoice and blossom.  Like the crocus, it will burst into bloom; it will rejoice greatly and shout for joy.”  For the people of God, there current experience is one of sadness and lose; but, God reminds them that new life is coming and it will bring joy, hope, healing, and peace.

The crocus is one of the first flowers of spring, often blooming when the grips of winter are still being felt.  When we see the crocus bloom, we know winter will soon be over and spring is on the way.

Participating in the food pantry at Zion Lutheran Church in Landisville has been an eye-opener for me. The reason is that I subconsciously reasoned that the real needy people are in the cities, or other areas not as well off as the people in Hempfield Township. Since participating, this worthwhile mission has thankfully helped me to make some new mental adjustments.

I enjoy greeting each one as they come to register. Sometimes I even get to practice my Spanish. They are, without exception, so polite and willing to talk. They are coming for food because of having either: a low paying job, lost a job or health issues that prevent them from working.

One lady that comes exemplifies a true spirit of joy and serenity. She often has one or two children with her; however, she has multiple children, many of whom are either foster or adopted. She home-schools all of them. Every time she comes in, I am impressed how happy, content and grateful she is. She is a shining example to me of the saying, “The best things in life aren’t things.” I am thankful for this opportunity to serve in this way.
