You are invited to join the Jr. High youth in the Souper Bowl of Caring: Bring a donation of cash or a nonperishable food item to church on Sunday, February 7! All proceeds will go to the Water Street Mission in Lancaster. More than 20 years ago, the Souper Bowl of Caring began with a simple prayer from a single youth group: “Lord, as we enjoy the Super Bowl football game, help us be mindful of those without even a bowl of soup to eat.” The Souper Bowl of Caring is a grass roots, faith based crusade against hunger and since its beginning in 1990 has raised over $60 million. In 2009, over 13,00 groups raised over $10 million for soup kitchens, food banks and other helping charities. Although Souper Bowl of Caring most often benefits local food banks and soup kitchens international hunger organizations have been recipients as well.

The progress on construction is being limited by the weather.

Building Committee is dealing with details and is holding the line on expenses

The use of excess dirt to make a flat area for recreational use

Is on master plan but not in current project

Requires township approval, $700-$2,500

$5,000 to do actual work

Recreation group would consider allocating $3,000 to $5,000 for this use

Formal request has not been received by Steering Committee

Stewardship update—Lynn Roth

The Finance Committee is surveying the congregation to determine the level of financial commitment to the LMS Education Tuition Fund on the part of families whose children are attending LMS and on the part of other persons within the congregation. Based on the response to this survey, the Finance Committee will decide what recommendation to make to the Congregational Leadership Board about the future of the LMS Education Tuition Fund.

The Finance Committee recommends that Board authorize the application for a line of credit for operating expenses on the congregation in order to meet any short-term cash flow needs that may arise in the future. It is a good financial practice to plan for a safety net and easier to get a line of credit when you don’t need it. Board approved the recommendation.

Missionary Support Task Force report—Gary Sensenig

Gary presented the work of the Missionary Support Task Force, who was created by Board to address questions regarding MST’s, missionaries, and financial support. The Task Force Assignment included:

Project financial guidelines for congregational missionary support

Define steps for first time and returning aspirants to discern ministry involvement and to seek congregational financial support

Project time frame for leadership boards to process and approve terms for first time and returning workers

Develop guidelines for relationship between MST, aspiring worker, Ministry Team and congregation.

Board expressed thanks to Gary and the Task Force for their work. Board will review the proposal and take action at the next meeting in March.

Ministry Leadership Team: Randall Shull

a. Assoc. Pastor of Worship

Randall presented the job description to Board and noted that Team recommends this position be 1/3—1/2 time. Board commits to addressing this need by mid-February, when there will be more budgetary clarity.

Closing Prayer—Beth Martin

Next meeting: March 15, 2010, 7:00 pm

Dear Church family, Dustin and Sarah’s youngest son, Reuben fell from a tree house this Monday evening. It fractured his skull and he had a contusion, which they operated on to remove the broken pieces and to put a plate in. The brain was not pierced by the bone piece. He came through the surgery well and is recuperating nicely. They hope to bring him home on Wed. or Thurs. Please continue to pray that he would heal totally and quickly. We are all thanking our Heavenly Father for his protection and care. –Dave & Marian

Candy making totals: The congregation helped the youth raise more than $3800. We again thank everyone for your generosity in offering time, energy & funds to make the fundraiser so successful and enjoyable!

Helpful background:

Dwelling in the Word Instructions

Read the passage, listening to the whole story.

Re-read the passage, paying attention to what word or phrase or portion of the passage to which you are drawn.

Sit with that part of the scripture and listen, allowing the Spirit to speak to you.

Dwelling in the Word is a communal, repetitive spiritual discipline. Post your thoughts from today and return regularly to dwell in one of these scripture once again. If you are using this discipline with a group of people, take time for individuals to share what they are hearing in the passage.

Topics needed for parenting class: One of the intergenerational Sunday school electives in the month of March will be a discussion-oriented class on parenting. Topics will include discipline and handling money, and we hope to connect with parents of children of all ages. We need other suggestions for topics that address real needs and concerns of parents in our congregation. If you have a topic or question that you would like to see addressed by parents in the congregation, please contact Brenda Horst or Jonathan Bowman.

Please pray for the Senior High youth as they attend the Lancaster Conference Youth Retreat this weekend: that those participating in the weekend would experience growth, both in our desire to follow Christ and in our closeness as a group.
