The flowers on the piano are in honor of Don and Faye Nyce, placed there by their family, to mark their 50th wedding anniversary, Feb. 27.

Chile relief: Dustin and Sarah Gingrich, EMM missionaries from Landisville Mennonite, continue active involvement in relief efforts in Chile. If you would like to assist Chile relief efforts with a financial gift, funds can be sent to ”Chile relief, EMM, PO Box 458, Salunga, PA 17538″. Please continue to hold the people of Chile in prayer.

Embroidery of newborn blankets: For several years our congregation has gifted families at Parent-Child dedications with a blanket, which contained an embroidery with the baby’s name and birthday.  Mae Stoltzfus most recently embroidered these blankets.  We are currently looking for someone who would be willing to take the blankets to an Embroiderer so that this gift can continue.  If you would be willing to assist in this, please contact a member of the pastoral team.

“Were you there?” A walk through Holy Week
Our traditional service on April 1 (Maundy Thursday) will take a different shape this year. Following our series of worship services in Lent, our Holy Week worship service will invite us back into the experiences of Holy Week.  Using guided reflections, scripture reading, sights and sounds, & acts of worship such as communion & prayer, you will be invited to walk through the days of Holy Week.  More information to about the service will be provided in coming weeks.

The Parenting Sunday school elective will discuss a different topic each Sunday in March (“Handling Money” March 7, “Discipline” March 14, “Boy/Girl Relationships” March 21, and “Passing on the Faith” March 28). If you are interested in serving on a panel of parents on any of these days, please let Jonathan Bowman know.

1.          Dwelling in the Word: 2 Corinthians 5.11-6.1

Jonathan led a time of dwelling in this passage and reflecting on what God was saying to us through it.

2.         Approving Minutes

Minutes from the January 11, 2010 meeting were approved as written.

3.         Reporting:

Lead Pastor—Randall Shull

1. Randall has a meeting with Demeke, pastor of the Ethiopian congregation, this week.
2. Reporting from Congregational Leadership Board meeting
   1. Randall shared the Missionary Support Team task force proposal and guidelines with Team.
   2. Randall updated Team on the Associate Pastor of Worship process.  The position will be reviewed at or by the next Board meeting.
3. Randall handed out a letter from the Bishop Board to credentialed leaders

Missional Life—Dan Burkhart

1. A Mission Spot was planned for the Good News Club on Sunday but church was cancelled. At least two teachers are still needed.
2. Dan’s coordinating an evening for Team to serve the community meal on April 22.

Christian Education—Gerry Baer

1. Vacation Bible School is planned for July 11-15. Coordinators are Brenda Horst, Jonathan Bowman, Nance Fertich, and Maura Fertich

Community Life—Carolyn Rudy

1. Carolyn is working on the program for May’s Wednesday Night Out.
2. Carolyn has received some affirmation for cutting costs at Winterfest, but others would like Winterfest to stay the same as previous years. A lower cost catered meal sit-down meal is being planned. The congregation will be asked for feedback through a questionnaire following Winterfest.

Addressing structure/role questions

a.       Christian Education

i.        Gerry reported on the Mennonite High School education fund and college education

ii.      The Sunday School Superintendent role is being discussed, possibly transitioning to 4 superintendents – 2 focusing up through youth and 2 focusing on adult Christian Education.

b.      Christian Formation

i.        The role is theological oversight and nurture from nursery to young adult.  To free Jonanthan for the oversight aspects of his role, the role of “program coordinator” is being looked at for the different age levels of ministry.

iii.    Jonathan has also given leadership to the website and computer tech support.

c.  The need for a uniform gift discernment and recruiting process was noted and will be discussed at future team meetings.

Taking up a cross:  a journey to Easter It is easy to jump from the events of Palm Sunday to Easter and miss the richness of the stories that take place in between. This year our Lenten worship services will guide us through the week of Holy Week, sharing the story of each day to see the events that unfolded as Jesus took up his cross. Each Sunday of Lent will focus on one specific day of Holy Week, starting of course with Jesus entering Jerusalem amidst waving palms. Join us as we journey with Jesus toward his cross and resurrection.

What are you “taking up”? Jesus invited us to take up our cross, even as he talked about his own.  This Lenten season we will be following Jesus through the stories of Holy Week, moving toward his cross and resurrection.  As we move with Jesus through these stories, you will be invited to consider what you might “take up”.  What might the Spirit of God be nudging you to take up as an act of sacrificial worship? a ministry of service? creating space for reading scripture? providing hospitality? mentoring a young person or couple? the possibilities are endless.  Hold the question out to God in prayer and listen closely for what God might invite you to “take up”.

For all who work with children: the superintendents and child protection committee ask that all childcare workers, children’s Sunday school teachers, mentors, etc., attend a brief informational meeting in the sanctuary following Sunday school today (if you missed the one on January 10), regarding our congregation’s child protection guidelines. If did not attend the previous meeting, and cannot make it to this one, please let Jonathan Bowman know.

Congregational Leadership Board -Meeting No. 252 (Special)  Feb. 14, 2010

Members present:  Ken Burkhart, Brenda Horst, Jim Ipsen, Nelson Kling (chair), Beth Martin, Larry Newswanger, Emily Shank, Clayton Suydam, Byard Yoder (vice chair), Mike Zehr

1.  Mennonite High School Education:  In light of the growing deficit for funding our commitment to LMH for the students attending from LMC and our intention to assist our students attending next school year, ’10-’11, we must address this issue now so parents and congregation can plan for the next school year.  Gerry did a survey, asking our members how much they could pledge for the remainder of the current school year and how much they could pledge for next school year.  From this survey, $19,000 was pledged for the current school year and $20,000 for the next school year.  We need about $34,000 to cover our current deficit and expenses for this current school year, by June 2010.

Recommendation:  That $34,000 be allocated for LMH by June, for those students attending this              school year, and that we budget $2,000 for each student attending next school year, anticipating that five students will attend for a total amount of $10,000.  Unanimously approved  by all Board members present.

2.  Mission and Service involvement and support guidelines:  With LMC being responsible to contribute to Eastern Mennonite Missions the balance of funding that the Gingrich and Myers Missionary Support Teams are obligated for, and with there being an increasing monthly deficit to EMM, we discussed the January 2010 proposal, “Guidelines for Mission and Service Involvement and Support”.  The task force comprised of Gary Sensenig (chair), Glen Hoover(Sec.), Dan Burkhart (Min. of Missional Life), Helen Hertzler and Lynn Roth presented this in our January 2010 meeting.  We feel the task force has done an excellent job of pulling this proposal together. This proposal establishes some parameters for our global mission and service involvement, participation and support.  We need to take action promptly, so our missionaries and their MST’s can plan at least six months in advance.  Recognizing that changes in our funding of current missionaries with EMM should not be implemented until the end of their current term, we considered this recommendation.

Recommendation: That Landisville Mennonite congregation supports our long term missionaries that are eligible at the level in the proposed “Guidelines…Support Levels:  2. Long Term, b. Annual limit of up to 25% of the member’s annual budget(MST) shall be used as a support guideline,” and that the proposed “Guidelines for Mission and Service Involvement and Support” be discussed, modified and approved in our next regular scheduled meeting.  Unanimously approved by all Board members present.
